Please let us know the operating system & the version of AVG that is installed on your computer (Open AVG - Menu - About).
Also, clarify what happens exactly while attempting to connect with AVG protection enabled. Do you receive any error message from AVG?
If so, share us the screenshot of it for better clarity.
Meanwhile, please disable Email shield alone & let us know the outcome. (Open AVG Internet Security - Web & email tile - click on toggle bar beside Email shield).
