Totally stopped trusting AVG - can anyone help?

I’ve been subscribing to AVG for years, and trusting it. It kept on getting me to buy new products, and I kept on buying them, but I wasn’t really paying close attention because I was having health problems. Then last fall, I realized it had double charged me for Multidevice - once in October and once in December. I thought it was an innocent mistake, but I’ve spent hours trying to get a refund. Can’t be done. Then I realized that they were going to keep double- charging me for those every year. I’ve tried to unsubscribe. Can’t be done. You click unsubscribe, and it ignores you. In the past, I’ve also been subscribed to things I didn’t want: they subscribe you and then say you can unsubscribe, but you can’t. So you give up and just accept it. Just this week, it tried to subscribe me to something I didn’t want - next payment due December 31, 1969. Yes, 1969.I used to subscribe to it but then stopped, so it started me again against my will. Luckily, it failed because my payment information has changed, and my Visa reported a suspected scam. I now think that AVG, the company I have trusted for years, is totally untrustworthy, and I don’t know how to get it to stop charging me for things I don’t want. Is there a support group for this? All I can do is keep a close eye on the payments I’ve already made and report them to Paypal if they don’t stop, but they obviously won’t refund me for what they have double-billed..

Give them a shout on either facebook messenger or X, it’s the only way to get a hold of them

I also think the idea of using X is a good one. If you’re using PayPal you could also try opening a ‘case’ via PayPal and seeing if they can get a response from AVG.

As a general rule I’ve always bought AVG products via resellers. I then get an activation code and that way I never have to give AVG my payment details. I get emails from them regularly asking to spend more with them which I ignore and they periodically switch off the VPN on my devices with a message that I need to subscribe to get full functionality (I’m already subscribed of course). I just log out, log in again and everything comes back with full product functionality and the correct product expiry date.

They’re not easy people to deal with but their competitors are much the same if you read their customer reviews.

Good luck.

Thank you for this suggestion, but I’m afraid I don’t follow. How do I contact them on Facebook messenger or X? How do they justify being so difficult to contact?

Thank you for your help. I’ve tried opening a case through Paypal. They tried to bill me through Paypal last week, but it didn’t go through since my visa card had changed, and there doesn’t seem any way to identify them. I have tried to block them on paypal, but you can’t do that without their contact name, and I can’t find it : think they must disguise their name. E.g. Dr. AVG doesn’t work. From what I have seen, they are incredibly dishonest and manipulative. Possibly I should sign up for one of the paid third-party services to get help? I don’t know how to contact them on X or messenger. They have stolen $184 from me so far, and if I can’t stop them, they will keep stealing from me every year. The best I can hope for now is to get the money refunded and stop them from accessing my account. If you can give me any specific advice (not great with technology), I would appreciate it. I’m a senior citizen being hurt by the declining stock market, and I really can’t afford this. Thanks!

Seems like you’re at the point where you need professional advice from a consumer organisation or even a lawyer. Do you not have a family member who could help out?

I see you’re in the USA? I’m in the UK so I can’t really advise on that but over here we have an organisation called Citizens Advice who offer free advice to people like yourself in circumstances like this.

What I would say is that if the card associated with your PayPal account is now expired it should be impossible for them to take any more money. You probably shouldn’t sign up for anything else with AVG until it’s resolved you’ll probably only make matters worse.

OMG! I just got an email telling me I had “successfully renewed” Tune-up! I haven’t checked yet to see if they actually did that since I haven’t given them my new payment information. But maybe this will enable me to contact Paypal. These people are unbelievable crooks!
