Don't know how many of you have had a problem with Tune -up; I have had my windows PC destroyed by tune up - having t completely reinstall windows. It appears to have prevented me logging in as administrator, and even in safe mode, no programs run and I cannot access a browser to get online support from Microsoft. AVG support tell me that they cannot help because windows is affected. After 2 hours of trying, MS support they say I have no option but to reformat the HD and reinstall.
I was working methodically through the processes, being careful not to delete critical folders or files, and being reassured by the 'this is completely safe' notices.
Be warned!
Andy,
Thank you for the explanation. We certainly understand your concern. We have sent you an email instruction to get connected with our technical support team. Please follow those instructions to get in touch with them and you should be able to resolve your issue. Thank you!
Sorry to hear you have problems too John.
Ranjani, as requested in your PM:
My PC is running Windows 7 home, with all MS updates installed and AVG as the only virus checker installed. It is a stand alone home PC.
I was trying the free day trial of Tune up to see if it was worth taking out a subscription.
I have trust in AVG having used them for some years, otherwise I woulds not have considered a tune up program.
I usually do a tune up manually, so I do have some understanding of what I’m doing. I also read PC advisors review of 21st October 2016 which seemed reassuring.
I ran each ‘module’s tune up in turn; I did not defrag, but did use, in order:
Startup optimisation
Clean registry
Application ‘turn off’
Repaired broken shortcuts
Did NOT use the duplicate file module - have recently done this myself
Clean up - removing cashes and temp files - this is the one that did the damage.
At no time did I get warning messages, and I was very careful not to do anything I didn’t understand.
All seemed well after this - I continued using the PC that day.
The next day I could not login to windows as administrator, access denied. It could not run my profile.
In safe mode, running msconfig to disable as but MS services, tried a reboot - no change.
Use a windows rescue disk to reboot - no change.
Downloaded a clean version of windows and tried a repair - no change.
Could not start any program, nor any browser.
Could not locate user>myname>admin - folder deleted.
It seems that drivers, profiles, some registry files have been deleted, and enough OS files deleted so that a repair was not possible.
MS engineer spend two hours trying but in the end recommended a format reinstallation of windows.
Gutted.
Andy
