Hello Rick,
I really appreciate your efforts in resolving this issue. Yes, AVG Free Antivirus 2017 version have the option/features for manual updates (open AVG Free Antivirus > menu > settings > update), you can also set the schedule scan (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-start-or-plan-a-computer-scan) in AVG free Antivirtus 2017. Feel free to contact us again if you need any further assistance.
Best regards,
Alok.
Hello Avinash,
When I tried your suggestion I found that somehow what I had was called AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. It did not have an option to repair so I uninstalled it. I then went back on the internet, found the AVG program I think I actually wanted, and installed it. I was offered either a basic antivirus for free or a full suite with a subscription fee. I took the first choice. It performed a scan and then offered again to do more but since this was not wanted I closed the window.
A related question: It looks like the the basic program does not have options to update virus definitions or schedule scans. Is this correct?

Hello Alok,
Thanks. I feel a little foolish because when I opened AVG Free the first time I did not get into the program far enough to see the actual settings but stopped when I got the sales pitch to try the extras. In my defence it is not obvious what has to be done to run the program. But now I do know so thanks again for the help. You can consider this issue closed.
Regards,
Rick
