Uninstall AVG Free Antivirus

I have an old MacBook Pro (2012) with the free AVG Antivirus installed. I would like to remove the AVG antivirus software and replace it with a subscription to Avast antivirus software.  I was unsuccessful in removing the AVG software myself, and even Apple support techs were unable to remove it too.  Help!!!
