If the issue persists, reboot your computer in safe mode with networking [http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-reboot-your-computer-into-Safe-Mode] and run AVG Clear tool alone to remove the traces. After removing the traces, reboot the PC in normal mode and install AVG Free https://www.avg.com/en-au/download
Sorry I left that info out.When I select the "free AVG" program to change It will lock up and nothing happens. regardless of a program that I select to repair, I never get an option to repair. i am using Windows 10 Home, version 1803, Buil 17134.137
I have used free avg for years. Today when trying to run it, when clicking on the shortcut icon, it would not show the dash panel. I have tried the following: uninstall from control panel/programs/uninstall. Ran the AVG remover. Ran the AVG clear. All did not work. I downloaded a fresh copy and tried to overwrite the existing copy on my computer. did not work. i did find that several AVG processes were "suspended" when looked at in task Manager, did a clean reboot then tried all of the above, nothing worked.
Any help will be appreciated.

Paul, we appreciate your efforts taken in this matter.
When the AVG clear doesn't respond, we suggest customer to boot into safe mode and run the tool.
Since we did a major change with the program, there are two tools (remover & clear) available.
AVG remover tool to remove old version of AVG and "Clear" to remove the latest version.

i went to the site you suggested, downloaded and ran AVG REMOVER, it seemed to work okay. After restart, downloaded and ran AVG CLEAR. It has now been 2 and 1/2 hours and it still states it is running. The LED indicating hard Drtive activity only blinks once in a while. I read this as the AVG CLEAR has frozen somewhere in its activity. Anyway thanks for your suggestions, but I guess I will live without AVG.

You can reboot your device in safe mode and run AVG clear to remove the traces of AVG. Follow the steps mentioned in first response to reboot your device in safe mode.
