If I set Virus Definitions update settings to ask when an update is available
I get a warning on AVG main window that Protection is disabled

Please be informed that AVG program check for latest virus definitions in regular intervals to make sure the app is installed with latest virus definitions to ensure better protection. If you change it to manual, the program will show an error message on the interface because it is not recommended. It is either you enable automatic virus definition update or ignore the error message.
