Hello David.
Thank you for contacting us. In the latest version of AVG, the program will automatically checks for the available updates every 8 hours(free version) and 2 hours (paid version) and downloads if any updates available. You can disable the definitions update schedule but we do not recommend you doing that. Thank you.
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64)
AVG Free 2015 (x64) 2015.0.6173
I am still using AVG Free 2015 because I want to control when and even whether to update the software. This capability was removed from AVG Free 2016. In the latter, the user could only control when and whether to update the virus definitions. Has this capability been restored in AVG Free 2016?
Pushing changes to software without the user's permission is a characteristic of malware. Indeed, even for desireable software and desireable changes, this can have a negative impact on my use of my PC.
If I am performing a time-sensitive financial transaction requiring the full bandwidth provided by my ISP, the consumption of CPU capacity and bandwidth can delay completion of my transaction to the point that I am fiscally impacted.
On top of that, I have observed that updating the AVG software causes a temporary disabling of its functionality. While the loss of functionality might be brief, it is still sufficient to permit malware to attack my PC. To protect my PC, my practice had been to download a complete AVG Free installer for an update, disable my Internet connection, and then install the update. This is no longer possible.
Pushing software updates is not acceptable. Just ask those Windows users who refuse to update to Windows 10 for the same reason.
