Using Connectify Hotspot With AVG Internet Security

Thanks.  I will work with them for the SvchHost.exe and SYSTEM blocking.  For anyone else that is trying to get Connectify Hotspot working with AVG this is what I did.

1.  Select Network Connections from the Tools menu in Connectify .
2.  Right click and select Properties on the Local Area Connection with the same name as you named your hotspot.
3.  When the Properies opens click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) item.
4.  Click Properties button.
5.  Connectify should have set it up to use a specific IP address.  Write down that IP address.  (On mine it is 192.168.5.1.)
6.  Open AVG Firewall.  Look for the Gear symbol below and to the right of the Reset To Default button.
7.  Click the Gear icon and select Advanced Settings...
8.  In the window that shows up, click on Expert Mode button in lower left corner.
9.  Click Defined Networks.  Add the full subnet range of the IP address you wrote down to both IP Address Whitelist and Fictive Local IP Address.  Once added it should look something like this on both lines:  192.168.x.1  - 192.168.x.255  where x is from the value you wrote down above (e.g. on mine it is of the form 192.168.5.1  -  192.168.5.255.  This is very important because most types of data will not be transfered to your device without it.
10.  Click Apply (you will have to enter Admin password).
11.  Next click System Services.  Under User-Defined System Rules click Manage or Add Your Own System Rules.
12.  Click Add on the pop-up.  Set to UDP, In, local port 67, remote ports 68, remote address range 0.0.0.0  - 0.0.0.1.  The logs show FilterDevice being blocked for 0.0.0.0 on mine, but that is not a valid value for single IP.  You may want to look at your logs to make sure that is the  IP being blocked when your device is stuck on "Obtaining IP Address".  I named my Rule Connectify - Obtain IP Address because that is what it allows.
13.  Click Add again to create another rule.  Set that Rule to TCP, Out, local port to whatever is getting blocked according to your logs (see Logs line below System Rules line mentioned in Step11.  I saw values on mine in the range 10000 to 10041 for Facebook, but suggest setting higher...I used 10100...and maybe watch log for awhile to see if higher values get blocked.  For remote address  I used Safe Networks.  I named my Rule Connectify - Data Transfer because that is what it makes work.  At least for Facebook.
14.  Click Ok button and enter admin password.
15.  Your device should work, at least for Facebook.  I suggest trying other apps and watching the log for things that get blocked.  I will add to this as I spot new things as I have not seen anywhere on Google search that worked for me.

Thanks for the quick response.  I did the Reset to Default.  Now my Dropbox.exe Svchost.exe and SYSTEM are being blocked.  A rule was made for Connectify but it is still being blocked.  I was able to get my devices to connect by using a range, 0.0.0.0 - 0.0.0.1 for the UDP Remote Address instead of 0.0.0.0.

But, the other rule that I created for allowing data transfer once connected is no longer working  So I guess now my question is how do I get AVG to stop blocking Dropbox.exe Svchost.exe and SYSTEM?  And how do I get the TCP rule I mentioned earlier to work?

Thanks

Hello Bill,

We are sorry to know that the AVG program is blocking the Wifi connection. To fix this issue, we suggest you to click on "Reset to Default" button in AVG firewall and this will reset all the settings. After which check if you are able to fix this issue.
Thank  you

I have to turn off AVG Internet Security Firewall in order for Connectify Hotspot to provide WiFi connections for my devices.  By looking at the Firewall logs I was able to turn the firewall back on and have it work once my devices are connected by adding this rule:

TCP     Out       Local Ports 10000 - 100031  Remote Port 443  Remote addresses:  Safe Networks   Allow

I am now trying to get it to allow my devices to connect without being permanently stuck in Obtainin IP Address and without having to shutdown AVG firewall.  In the log I am getting the same Application:  FilterData  blocking (what does FilterData mean?) repeatedly while a device tries to negotiate an IP address with Connectify.   Here is the log entry:

Application:  FilterDevice
Action:         Block
User:            is a blank field
PID:             0
Direction:      In
Protocol:       UDP
Remote Port: 68
Local Port:     67
Remote IP:    0.0.0.0
Local IP:        255.255.255.255

Problem is that when I try to define a rule, it says that when I use 0.0.0.0 as the Remote Address it gives popup Ok box that says Incorrect Single IP Address.  I tried selecting All Networks instead, but it still blocks with the same log entry.  I even tried using the IP address / mask setting with 0.0.0.0 and 255.255.255.255 and same error.

How would I stop this FilterDevice from blocking?  Any other suggestions for other blockades that I likely to run into (e.g.additional Local Ports besides 10000 - 100031 or Remote addresses besides Safe Networks?

Didn't AVG at one time have a button that could be clicked in the traffic log so that a blocked action could be changed to Allow or Ask?  Or was that some other program?

Thanks
Bill Jones

Bill,
Thank you so much for sharing the useful information on this community.

Bill,

We regret for the inconvenience caused to you, we appreciate all your efforts in trying to fix the issue. In this case, we suggest you to perform the below steps.

Please disable your AVG program as suggested here: http://avgclick.me/TempDisableAVG, then Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right click on the network area which is active -> "Properties".

If there is "AVG Network filter driver" uninstall it and restart the computer twice. AVG Firewall initializes auto-repair function so "AVG Network filter driver" should be automatically installed (therefore two restarts are needed).

If Dropbox.exe Svchost.exe and system are still gets blocked, please try to add those file to the exception list: http://avgclick.me/AddException and check for the issue. Let us know if you face any difficulties, thank you!

Ok I got Dropbox unblocked and Connectify working.  Now the only issue is that AVG log is full of entries where SYSTEM and svchost.exe are being blocked.  They are of the form:

SYSTEM
In
IGM
0  Remote Port
0  Local Port
Remote IP:  192.168.1.x  where x values are my Surveillance camera, printer and a couple addresses that are not on my network.
Local IP:  of the form 224.0.0.x or 239.255.255.250

and

SVCHOST.exe
User:  Network Service or Local Service
In
UDF
Remote Port:  Various values
Local Port:  123 or 5355 or 3702 or 1900.

Should I just create rules to let these thru or is this likely something that should be blocked?

We certainly understand your concern. We have sent you an email instruction to get connected with our technical support team. Please follow those instructions to get in touch with them and you should be able to resolve your issue.
Thank you
