Hello Jim,
I am sorry to hear that. It could be possible that the latest updates have failed to install completely or the connection with update server was interrupted. Please follow the below steps and try to fix the issue.
-Please press Window key along with R key to open the Run command.
-Type ncpa.cpl on the Run command and enter to open the Network connections.
-Now right-click on your active internet connection (this may be "Ethernet", "Wireless Network Connection" or "Local Area Connection" depending on how your computer is set up) and select Properties.
-In the Networking tab, click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP4) to highlight it, and then click Properties.
-Select Use the following DNS server addresses and then enter the following:
Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4
-Click OK to finish.

i have my virus definitions and program update section in my avg internet security set for automatic updates. again tonight i looked at the avg home screen and it said avg was out of date and i had to click a screen to update it. with virus definitions there is a line that says—virus definitions and the hours since last update and after that line is some kind of an icon—if you click it it brings up the virus definitions and sometimes in runs a little something and says they are already up to date but sometimes it will update then. whats the point of auto updates if it doesn't do it automatically ? doesn't make me confident in the software. thank you.
If the issue persists, please provide the screenshot [ http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot] of the AVG version to assist further.
