Have done as you asked. under the heading Background Processes there were two entries "AVG antivirus installer(32bit)", I right clicked and then "end task" on both. Rebooted PC tried to update but no change same position as earlier screenshot.
My AVG virus definition is not updating. The updating bar tells me to wait but no further progress is made and no error mssages are flagged.

Please open task manager, click on 'Processes' tab to check if 'AVG Installer' process is running. If yes, right click on it and select 'End task'. If there are multiple instances of this process, end them all and reboot your PC. Then try to update AVG and let us know the outcome.
