From your description, it seems that either the program on your computer is unable to communicate with our server or an older version is installed.
To check this, let us know the version of AVG (Open AVG - Menu - About).
If not, you can share us the screenshot of the message to identify the version from our end.

My AVG Internet Security is telling me that my Virus Definitions are out-of-date,   When I click on "Update Now", no update occurs.   I keep getting the warning "Virus definitions are not up to date".   How do I resolve?
