We're glad to look into this & help you.
As we're uncertain about the settings that is configured on your program, please check the below settings :
Open AVG Secure VPN - Menu - Settings - General - Start Secure VPN when my computer starts
Open AVG Secure VPN - Menu - Settings - Network Security - Check whether Turn on 'Automatically when connected to internet' is enabled.

In 'Network security' Turn  on automatically when connected to the internat is selected, in 'General' Start secure VPN when computer starts, i have tried this on and off, neither works regularly. The small icon at the bottom of my screen doesn't always show, when it does i select I select Open AVG secure VPN, this displays a screen saying online privacy is not protected, If I xchange my location it comes on.

Appreciate your efforts in working towards fixing the issue, David.
If the above mentioned options are enabled, then AVG Secure VPN should connect automatically at startup. In this regard, we'd suggest you to check if the AVG Secure VPN icon is hidden or set to not notify in the taskbar setting.
Please click on the arrow facing up in the bottom right corner (system tray, near date & time) & check if Secure VPN is set to be visible in notification area. As we're uncertain about the operating system on your computer, we're unable to provide you with the exact steps…
