I understand the inconvenience. Please Refer the steps mentioned below to reset Antivirus app:
Device Menu -> Settings -> Apps/Application Management -> AVG Antivirus-> Tap on clear cache & Clear data -> Force stop the app once.
Now restart your device once and check if you are able to scan.
Also, let us know if you see AVG VPN program installed on your Device. If the issue persists, please provide the screenshot of the message to check and assist further.
I had the same problem & also AVG wouldnt do a speed test. Support team still looking into but I have managed to find this that worked. Hopefully link takes you through but if not

I have AVG Free on my Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016). Every time I attempt the WiFi Security or WiFi Speed scans, after only a few seconds I get a gray screen with a sad emoji face and a message that says "SCAN FAILED VPN CONNECTION ACTIVE."
Why does the scan fail every time? What is a VPN connection? And why is it hindering the scans?
