Please can someone clarify: Does avgantivirus free disables Defender or do I have to manually do that?

Please be informed that for any version of AVG Antivirus it is not possible to use both Windows defender and AVG.
Either one of it will be active. This is the common behavior for most of the antivirus product.
It is not recommended to use two antivirus program on same PC as they will conflict each other.

Hello Sheila,
I would suggest you to use Windows firewall along with AVG free. Please be informed that you do not need to enable Windows defender to use the in built firewall. Please follow the steps provided in this article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028544/windows-turn-windows-firewall-on-or-off to turn on Windows firewall.

Please also be informed that you must keep your Windows always up to date with latest updates if you plan to use Windows firewall.

Hi

I installed free antivirus on my new laptop running Windows 10 a couple of months ago but I cannot use window defender along side it. I have just been reading today on this support forum that they do work together so what is going on with mine. I am not sure which version of AVG that I have but I would assume it is the most up to date.

Sheila, Just for info… Windows Defender is an anti-malware component of Microsoft Windows. It was first released as a free antispyware program download for Windows XP, shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and made into a full antivirus program replacing Microsoft Security Essentials as part of Windows 8 and later versions which means if enabled on the same system with AVG the 2 progs will conflict with each other.

Please be informed that after installing AVG Antivirus in your computer, it will automatically disable the Windows Defender & the AVG Antivirus will take it's place.

Windows defender will be activated only if there is no other AntiVirus programs installed on your computer.

Thanks Midhun. Just one more question, does Defender re enable itself ever, such as after a windows update?

Ok thanks for that. Can you tell me then which free firewall will work with your free antivirus, I know you would probably prefer me to buy your full package but if I can get it free, of course, it would be a great help.  I have read so many reports regarding this, my head is spinning.
