Ronald,
Thank you for contacting us with your concerns. Did you try to disable the Real time protection in Windows defender and encountered any issue? If so, please let us know the exact error message to assist you further.
Windows Defender & Firewall out of the blue has made themselves the default anti virus & firewall, on my Windows 10 laptop.
AVG is still there showing all working, even scanning. This means I am running two anti virus & two firewalls.
I phoned AVG support, 18 minutes holding for advisor and 35 minutes that only resolved turning the Firewall off. The Anti Virus unresolved, still running both.
AVG turned off windows security on my Window 2000 & XP, also Window 10 until 23 Jan 17.
What to do please
Thank you for sharing the screenshots.
Both AVG Firewall and Windows Firewall are active. Please double click on Windows Firewall top open its properties. Then click on Stop to disable the Windows Firewall on your PC as you do not require 2 firewall programs running simultaneously.

I had disabled Real time protection, and all other Defender options, then rebooted. Defender still loaded and opened to my Task Bar.
I have gone to Task Manager > Startup and disabled Defender from starting. Which works, but it feels like a get around it option, not the proper solving of a problem.
Thank you for providing the screenshot.
Please click on "Windows Firewall" on the services window and at the top left check whether the option shows as "START" or "STOP" ?
