WireGuard Tunnel excessive data usage

Just a question and this is my 3rd attempt at this post?
Before I do a very time consuming  "Deep Dive" into AVG VPN WireGuard tunnelling I wanted some other input into it. In the past 13 days apparently my WireGuard Tunnel has used an excessive 17.6GB of Data.
This is me checking a few emails and a small amount of general Internet Browsing as re work schedule I've had little time … & yes this is also a wired Ethernet connection. No Wi Fi involved "Piggybacking" theories etc.
I have read another post and the person thought that 2GB was excessive.
Before anyone asks I have checked all my very expensive Router Protocols and the Laptop where the VPN is installed the settings for my VPN are set to automatic as advised by AVG in another post?
Anyone else noticing excessive data usage by AVG VPN without any obvious causation…
other than the worst… malware mining for Bitcoin or summit ridiculous?
Anyhoo it's also slowing down all my Internet traffic when I do use the VPN…again without obvious causation re DNS Protocols etc. On one particular day my Internet speed was reduced to 2mb instead of the normal 170Mb…again without any obvious causation. Just a theory but the use of Tor Tunnelling is niggling…errrr that would be the Tor tunnelling and Tunnel hopping  that I am not even using!! …do I have passengers in my tunnel without my expressed permission… or do I need my "Hecklefish" foil hat!!
Just wanted other theories and input, and I will solve it by returning to my usual VPN service I used for 8+ years without these issues…rhymes with "strikes a Cord"

Hey Sky,

Thank you for sharing your findings, and sorry for the delay. I'm Jovana, and I work with AVG Customer Care.

I appreciate your feedback and will do my best to clarify the concerns you seem to have regarding excessive data usage.

Aside from the actual usage of the device, even when it's idle, there will always be some traffic due to applications and services communicating over the web. In other words, minimal traffic is always present, especially if you're performing tasks online, like checking emails or watching videos on YouTube. However, rest assured, our VPN isn't designed to increase traffic. Instead, it bundles all the traffic, whether it’s from checking emails or app requests, into one secure VPN tunnel. We do not add or deduct anything, it is the traffic coming from your device, and the VPN just merges it through one secure tunnel, if that makes sense.

Additionally, the actual internet speed depends on various factors, such as the amount of traffic, the server you’re connected to, protocols, and the network itself. You can try changing the VPN protocol or location and measure the speed again to see if that improves performance.

To sum it up, the amount of data you mentioned doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. While we can’t guarantee that something else isn't draining your traffic, we can assure you that the VPN itself does not increase it. Rest assured, there are no "extra passengers" in the tunnel. Also, our VPN only has insight into the amount of data being transmitted, not the content of the traffic. I hope this helps address and clarify your concerns. If you need any further assistance, feel free to reach out, we’re here for you!
